What is a shadchun?

As is my style, I have many questions, but this time around I hope, G"W, to have answers.

Here goes with the questions.

Does one need a shadchun? Should a shadchun be paid? Does one need to be qualified to be a shadchun?

What does it take to be shadchun? Is it easier or tougher to be one today than once upon a time?
Why is it that more women are shadchunim then men?

What are the difficulties and issues facing a shadchun?

Wishing us all to a "getting nearer to answer questions" Shabbos
